Choosing the right software company

Ideally, you want someone you can partner with and collaborate with, not someone you have to manage. Here’s what’s worth looking for.

Clear communication

You need to be understood, and you need to understand them, without anything getting lost along the way, whether that’s a technical detail or just a straightforward answer to a straightforward question.

Cultural and industry fit

A company that understands your context, not just your requirements, will catch things a purely technical read of a spec sheet misses. Industry knowledge in particular helps surface gaps you might not think to mention, because you don’t know they matter until someone who’s seen them before points them out.

Real experience

Enough experience to actually deliver, and to deliver in a reasonable timeframe. This is worth asking about directly, not just assuming.

Modern tools

The tools a company builds with should be a deliberate, current choice, not whatever they learned once and never revisited. Ours are listed plainly on our Tech Stack page.

Testing as a real part of the process

Not an afterthought bolted on at the end. We’ve written about how testing fits into our own process on our Process page.

Time zone overlap

If regular communication matters to you (and it usually does), being able to talk in real time, not just over email with a half-day delay, makes a real difference.

Ongoing support

Software needs maintenance after it ships. It’s worth knowing upfront whether a company sticks around for that, or considers the relationship over at delivery.

Clear, complete pricing

A quote should account for all the parts of the project, not just the parts that are easy to estimate. We’ve written about what actually drives cost on our cost and enterprise cost pages.
