Why choose a custom solution when there’s already so much off-the-shelf software built? There are several real reasons it might be the better choice for you.
If your business is different enough that standard programs don’t fit, working around the limitations of off-the-shelf software can cost more in lost time and frustration than building something that does exactly what you need. That said, an off-the-shelf package is often a useful starting point. Trying something and seeing where it falls short is frequently the only way to identify what you actually need, and you might find parts of it you’d want kept in a custom system too.

Those aren’t licensing fees, they’re the ongoing cost of infrastructure you’re choosing to use, and they’d exist no matter who built the software.
