Write it down, always

If you’ve had the idea for a while, you’ve probably already thought about pieces of it at different times. Get it out of your head, notes, a document, whatever’s easiest. You don’t need to organize it yet, and you don’t need to have the unclear parts resolved. Just don’t lose it.

Keep doing this even after we’ve settled on a design and a cost. New ideas tend to show up right when you thought the thinking was done. That’s normal, not a sign you missed something the first time. We’re not going to throw a good idea away just because it arrived after the spec was written. It becomes part of what comes next.

Think about why it matters

What’s the actual problem you’re trying to solve? Not every detail of how it might work, just what’s broken or missing right now, and why fixing it matters to you or the people who’d use it. What would you gain once it exists? What would you be missing if it never gets built?

Find someone you trust to give an honest critique, or better yet, several people, to get a well-rounded opinion.
